Wizards prefer Deni Avdija not play FIBA this summer with Israel

Three months ago, it seemed Deni Avdija would skip playing for his native Israel this summer in the FIBA qualifying for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. However, the latest report suggests there is still a possibility he does play, and his NBA team, the Washington Wizards, may not like it.

Israel failed to reach next month’s FIBA Basketball World Cup. However, it’s one of 24 teams that will look to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games through the FIBA window.

According to Sports Rabbi, Deni Avdija is listed to play for Isreal. However, the Wizards would prefer that he skips it to be in Washington to work out ahead of the upcoming NBA season.

Avdija told Neil Dalal of Hoop District in April that he is unlikely to play internationally to work on his three-point shooting and left-hand dribbling.

Avdija averaged 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists — all career highs — last season through 76 games. He also made 40 starts. But while he shot a career-best 43.7%, he shot just 29.7% from three-point range.

It will be interesting to see what Deni ultimately decides. The Wizards have reshaped its roster, trading Bradley Beal, Kristaps Porzingis, and Monte Morris this summer. Washington also cleared the way for Avdija to play more by moving Rui Hachimura ahead of last season’s trade deadline.

Avdija must decide what he thinks is best for his development, playing for his country or preparing for the regular season.
